The impact of climate change on the critical weather conditions at Schiphol airport (HSMS03)

The aim of the project was: 1) to better understand the impact of climate change on the Schiphol operations, and 2) to provide new innovative tools to analyse and forecast the weather at the airport with an accuracy that Schiphol operations require. Adequate analysis and forecasting tools are needed for daily Schiphol operations, but also for a better understanding of the impact of climate change on future Schiphol operations. The available weather models needed to be renewed and better adjusted to the local situation at Schiphol airport. 

In Phase 1 of the project the focus was on building a strong knowledge base at all partner sites and to use this knowledge base for demonstration of potential impacts for Schiphol operations. For this study HARMONIE model data were simulated for a selection of weather case studies. The selected cases mainly represented the weather parameters wind, surface visibility, low clouds and precipitation. These weather parameters, and sudden changes therein, were identified to be most critical for Schiphol.

In follow-up phases the focus was on “harvesting” of the results of Phase 1 into new operational weather tools needed for a sustainable, safe and efficient functioning of Schiphol airport.

The operation at the Airport Schiphol is very sensitive to critical weather conditions such as fog and low-hanging clouds, intensive precipitation, severe wind and heavy rainstorms. Aviation safety and efficiency requires reliable weather information on a local scale.
